About us
History
Since its founding in 1992, the Montague Institute
has been educating executives and information professionals on cutting-edge
topics relating to corporate information services. The Institute's research
is unique because it spans all information disciplines and is based on
the staff's own experience. What our members say.
In 1998 we focused our research on knowledge
base publishing, a new information paradigm based on the integration
of print, Web, and database models. At that time, we established the Society
of Knowledge Base Publishers and added an A
- Z index.
In 2003, we incorporated the Knowledge
Base Publishing Lab to our teaching environment and started publishing
the Knowledge
Base Editor's Digest, a collection of abstracts with its own
A - Z index.
The following year, we added original commentaries in Point
of View.
In 2007, we created a separate unit called Montague
Information Technology LLC to provide knowledge
base customization and integration services to a well known, highly visible government agency.
Today, the Institute and its affiliates provide information,
networking opportunities, education, and implementation services to members
in large corporations, nonprofits, law firms, and government agencies.
Who we are
Jean Graef founded the Montague Institute in 1992
shortly after seeing a demonstration of the Internet. As a professional
librarian with a background in automated systems, she immediately saw
the Internet's potential as a global networking standard that would eliminate
the costs and delays of proprietary systems. As a business person, she
recognized the opportunity to provide new tools, techniques, and training
for information professionals and their clients. The Institute is named
for the town of Montague Center, Massachusetts, where its office was founded.
Today, the Institute consists of Jean and an international network of IT and content professionals.
What we do
At the Montague Institute, we:
 conduct research on topics related
to the integration of print, Web, and database publishing as well as
trends in information services and new business models. Research results
are published in the Montague Institute Review, a monthly Web
journal, which includes a digest, compilation of Internet discussion
group postings, and original articles.
develop hands-on educational programs
that allow participants to learn by doing.
evaluate selected commercial software
and develop new knowledge base publishing tools. Some of these programs
are used internally to make the Institute's work more efficient. Others,
such as the A - Z index and the Teaching Lab, are available to members.
sponsor a membership organization,
the Society of Knowledge Base Publishers.
Society of Knowledge Base Publishers
The Society of Knowledge Base Publishers offers
members original articles on interdisciplinary topics in the Montague
Institute Review, networking opportunities through Member
Q&A and roundtable discussions,
a Digest
of business and trade articles, and discounts on Montague Institute events
and courses.
How to become a member
Montague Information Technology
Montague Information Technology helps organizations
implement knowledge base publishing technologies by deploying custom versions
of the Knowledge Base Publishing Lab
and developing software "connectors" that integrate knowledge
base applications, such as e-mail, metadata repositories, search engines,
content and document management systems.
Customization and integration services are available
to organizations that contract for one or more Montague Institute courses.
