How to publish linked open data

March 7, 2012
11:00 to 2:00 pm Eastern time (8:00 am to 11:00 am Pacific), via teleconference

It's no longer a matter of if but when most of us will reconfigure our knowledge base plumbing from relational databases to the semantic web. Relational databases won't disappear, of course. It's just that the benefits of the semantic web for extracting more profit from customer relationships, increasing the ROI of the advertising dollar, extending the influence of new ideas, developing new pharmaceuticals, reducing publishing costs, and getting more from taxpayer dollars will be hard to ignore.

In this teleconference workshop, we'll look at some practical examples of linked open data publishing, review the basic concepts, and follow the publishing process step-by-step from relational database export, through schema selection and reconciliation, to the published semantic web code. We'll also discuss how to make your data easier to use and how to use data from other organizations in your own applications. Finally, we'll talk about how to sell the idea of linked open data to your organization and how it will change knowledge management job roles.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
At the end of the workshop, you should be able to:

  • Describe the benefits of linked open data for government, funding agencies, and media organizations;
  • Understand the underlying technologies that support open publishing;
  • Use RDFa code to enhance Web pages;
  • Contribute metadata to the Linked Open Data cloud;
  • Make a case for creating an open publishing strategy and plan.
